One of my clients recently had a case which I am explaining below and if you are stuck in such similar situation, here is what to do.
Note: Due to attorney-client privilege, I cannot disclose complete case details or identify the actual parties involved. However, I am sharing the essential facts and legal approach so that if you find yourself in a similar situation, you can understand the available solutions and legal remedies.
Mr.X approached our firm with a serious documentation issue that could have affected his entire future. His birth certificate and educational documents (10th and 12th mark sheets) showed his name as “Mr.X alias Mr.Y Mr.Z” while his Aadhar card, PAN card, driving license, and voter ID showed only “Mr.X Mr.Z”. This discrepancy created confusion during job applications and could have led to rejection of important documents during verification processes. Such inconsistencies often arise during document preparation over different time periods, but they can create significant legal and practical challenges. The client was concerned about potential issues in employment verification, property transactions, passport applications, and other official procedures where name matching across documents is mandatory. We advised him on the proper legal procedure to resolve this discrepancy and ensure uniformity across all his official documents.

The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Section 195 governs the procedure for recording statements and evidence authentication. Registration Act provisions apply for name correction in birth certificates. How the Police Behave in Such Cases
Police typically treat name discrepancy cases as civil matters rather than criminal ones unless fraud is suspected. They may conduct basic verification if complaints are filed about document forgery. Officers usually advise approaching appropriate government departments for correction procedures. Police involvement becomes necessary only if someone files complaint alleging fraudulent use of multiple names for illegal purposes. Generally, they cooperate with documentation correction process when proper legal procedures are followed.
