One of my clients recently had a case which I am explaining below and if you are stuck in such similar situation, here is what to do.

Note: Due to attorney-client privilege, I cannot disclose complete case details or identify the actual parties involved. However, I am sharing the essential facts and legal approach so that if you find yourself in a similar situation, you can understand the available solutions and legal remedies.

TL;DR: Sending death threats by email, Instagram or any other platform is a criminal offence in India, and it stays a criminal offence even when the sender hides behind anonymous accounts. You can file an FIR, and if the police won't register it, you can go to the Superintendent of Police or to a Magistrate. The most urgent thing you will do is preserve the messages before they vanish.

Tanvi replied to the email with two polite lines asking Nikhil to stop writing to her. By evening the tone had changed completely.

The messages came in bursts after that. Some landed on her personal email. Others arrived from Instagram handles with no picture and no followers. The content was blunt: he did not care about going to jail, he wanted a written affidavit from them, and he claimed his family's legal connections and his national law university background would keep him safe. One line told them to take it as a death threat.
